Book Club Night

I know there are a bunch of you out there who are avid readers. A few months ago, I joined a book club with my neighbour lady. I thought it would be interesting to meet new people and read books that I wouldn't ordinarily read. I thought I would share our selections with you each month and perhaps we could get some online discussions happening.

We just finished reading "The Memory Keeper's Daughter". I read this one while on vacation. I really enjoyed it. Here is a synopsis....

In 1964, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins, he immediately recognizes that one of them has Down Syndrome and makes a split-second decision that will haunt all their lives forever. He asks his nurse to take the baby away to an institution and to keep her birth a secret. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child as her own. Compulsively readable and deeply moving, "The Memory Keeper''s Daughter" is an astonishing tale of redemptive love.

Our new selection for this month is "Tsotsi". It looks very interesting and is being made in to a feature film. I have included the synopsis for this book as well.

Set amid the sprawling Johannesburg township of Soweto, where survival is the primary objective, Tsotsi traces six days in the life of a ruthless young gang leader. When we meet Tsotsi, he is a man without a name (tsotsi is Afrikaans for "hoodlum") who has repressed his past and now exists only to stage and execute vicious crimes. When he inadvertently kidnaps a baby, Tsotsi is confronted with memories of his own painful childhood, and this angry young man begins to rediscover his own humanity, dignity, and capacity to love.

Hopefully, I've inspired some of you to pick up a book you may not have found on your own and maybe even enjoy it! Keep me posted...

I really want to read The Memory Keeper's Daughter. The entire time you were reading it on vacation I wanted to take it away from you so that I could read it myself. :)

So, I went to Costco and bought 'The Memory Keeper's Daughter' late last week. I read it on the weekend (in between Easter festivities) and have now passed it on to my mom.

I thought it was kind of dark, but really interesting.
